The latest Buzz Report from Meltwater Buzz demonstrates the questions that Bartz's firing raise

Media_httpwwwholmesre_hijmw

The latest Buzz Report from Meltwater Buzz demonstrates the questions that Bartz's firing raise. Yahoo has struggled in the face of compeition from other digital and social media players, and its decision to remove Bartz after just 18 months saw question the company's future direction.

Following her dismissal, Bartz chose to inform Yahoo’s 13,400 employees via email, prompting questions about her professionalism. The online community also debated who would replace Bartz as the next prominent female CEO in Silicon Valley and whether the severance package she is believed to have received should have been enough to encourage her to step down gracefully.

This has resulted in a world in which everyone has a voice - it is true democratisation.

Who will generate content in the future, how this will change the PR, marketing and publishing industries and how individuals will consume content? — NevilleHobson.com

#focdeb
Neville Hobson writes..
I was looking again at some of the video recordings of last week’s debate at the  British Library in London that I went to, organized by B2B  SaaS company Meltwater, and which addressed the topic of " The Future of Content."
The debate and subsequent Q&A session lasted two hours – you can watch the  complete-event video as if you were there – and was a worthwhile experience listening to the keynote address from  Richard Sambrook, Edelman’s Chief Content Officer (and a former Director of Global News at the BBC) and the panel members’ commentaries ably facilitated by panel chair  Matthew Gwyther, the editor of Management Today magazine.
And a stellar panel it was comprising  Jorn Lyseggen, founder and CEO of Meltwater (at left in the video still photo);  Francis Ingham, CEO, PRCA;  David Pugh, Managing Director, NLA (centre in the photo);  Helen Dunne, Editor of CorpComms Magazine; and  Lionel Bently (right in the photo), a specialist in intellectual property law and Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property and Information Law at the University of Cambridge.
How the debate was described set a pretty high expectation level:
The Future of Content will examine who will generate content in the future, how this will change the PR, marketing and publishing industries, how individuals will consume content and how/whether content could/will be monetized going forward.

Meltwater Buzz Engage allows businesses to manage their social presence and engage with current and prospective customers

ü Advanced tools help businesses find and join social communities that surround their brands to transform conversations into customers

San Francisco — June 15, 2011 — The Meltwater Group, one of the world’s leading social media and news monitoring companies, today announced the immediate availability of Meltwater Buzz Engage, a new module in the Meltwater Buzz product suite. Engage fuses the social CRM and business offerings of the recently acquired JitterJam product with the social media monitoring and analysis capabilities of Meltwater Buzz. This makes Engage the most comprehensive social marketing tool for businesses, brands and agencies on the market today.

Engage allows businesses to manage their social presence and engage with current and prospective customers. The platform’s detailed social profiles provide brands with deep intelligence on anyone communicating on a given brand or topic over social channels. Engage enables social tagging and houses all inbound social communications for more targeted engagement and immediate action and response. Brands can also take advantage of detailed measurement and advanced conversation analysis tools for maximised business value. By focusing on specific individuals within a community rather than a generic topic, Engage helps companies develop more personal, trusted relationships with customers.
“Social media has put the customer in the power position, and influencers have sprouted all over the social Web,” said Niklas de Besche, executive director, Meltwater Buzz. “With Meltwater Buzz Engage, companies can gracefully embrace this shift in influence by identifying relevant social conversations happening on the real-time Web. Engage allows brands to take a targeted and tailored engagement approach – turning conversations into customers.”

Meltwater Debuts Social Media Monitoring Platform Buzz Engage

Social media monitoring company The Meltwater Group is debuting new product, called Buzz Engage today, which promises to be one of the more comprehensive social marketing tools for businesses.
Leveraging the software of social CRM platform JitterJam and social media monitoring client BuzzGain (Meltwater acquired both companies in the past year), Buzz Engage goes beyond just social media monitoring, tracking and analytics for businesses. The product also provides brands with deep intelligence on anyone communicating on a given brand or topic over Twitter or Facebook by aggregating all of that person’s social history and scoring them for sentiment, brand affinity clout etc.
Profiles include full public social biographies, social activity analysis, a social graph with alternate social identities, communication history and notes, brand engagement and sentiment analysis, Jitterater influencer score (sort of like Klout), the individual’s top five personal contacts, fully customizable tagging and contact segmentation.
Buzz Engage also includes the ability to Retweet, @message, or DM contacts from the platform, as well as share to Facebook. You can schedule Twitter and Facebook posts and review a communications calendar to see outbound messages sent and scheduled.
Meltwater, which claims it is seeing $100 million in revenue per year, faces competition from Radian 6 (bought by Salesforce), and others.

Overall reaction to the eG8 was a positive one

A summit of government and industry leaders focused squarely on the development of the internet, the eG8 was - in many ways - the first conference of its kind. As such, the event attracted considerable attention according to the latest Buzz Report analysis by Meltwater Buzz.

The spikes on the infographic below illustrate the level of engagement. The chart also makes clear that overall reaction to the eG8 was a positive one with sentiment remaining high.

So what are the best practices for creating an engaging social stream? / Brian Solis

.
As a consumer, you are blasted with the same request over and over: “Follow Us on Twitter, Like Us on Facebook.” Why should I? What’s in it for me?
These are questions of which a significant number of businesses cannot genuinely answer
Today, a notable number of businesses are approaching branded social channels from a “ready, fire, aim” approach. This method conjures a facade of achievement when in fact, any progress, if at all recognized, is short term and shoddy at best. Many focus on numbers without first analyzing who they’re trying to reach and, more importantly, how engagement satisfies the needs of their customers. Without a mature content and engagement strategy, a great unfollow and unlike movement is inevitable.
Meltwater Buzz is an innovative social media monitoring tool that enables comprehensive tracking and analysis of user-generated content on the web

Results are but for the moment. Knowing what influences results is a never-ending process of learning and improving / via Dan Purvis, Meltwater Buzz

Measuring social media moments is an exercise that creates diminishing returns. Why? Because people’s attention, attraction, affinity, audience preferences and subsequent actions change often. Trying to use technology to control rather than influence human behavior is a fruitless exercise that produces useless data.
Results are but for the moment. Knowing what influences results is a never-ending process of learning and improving.
“any observed statistical regularity will tend to collapse once pressure
is placed upon it for control purposes.”

The volume and sentiment of online conversations around the royal wedding / Meltwater Buzz

With the clock now definitely ticking, conversation around the world has been dominated by the details of the biggest wedding of the year. The topic on everyone’s lips, from general chit chat to worldwide news, is of course the upcoming royal nuptials. Whether you care about how Kate will wear her hair, or who will be sitting next to who on the big day, it’s almost impossible to escape the hype.
The conversation online has been constant as the royal wedding continues to make headline news, and two topics of particular interest that we have been monitoring are the dress and security around the day itself.
Using Meltwater Buzz, we analysed the volume and sentiment of online conversations around the royal wedding, the royal wedding dress and the security for the day.  Of those, security returned the highest volume of online buzz.
Image001
However, volume of online buzz alone doesn’t give the full story. On the surface it would seem that the topic discussed most widely is the wedding day security. Dig a little deeper into the sentiment of these online conversations however, and we find that the topic generating most debate and conversation is not the “biggest security event in history”, costing a reported minimum of £20million, but what Kate will be wearing on her wedding day.
Image002

“Most people have an opinion on the royal wedding whether or not they are excited about it. What we have attempted to do here is show that when you are analysing online sentiment you can’t simply take the raw data at face value.  Instead, you have to apply further scrutiny to find the insight that you are looking for. In this case a high volume of mentions of the term ‘security’ could mislead someone into thinking that is the most conquered topic. But significant fluctuations in sentiment around the dress show that the bride’s attire is the thing that has really dominated conversations.” Says Mike Anderson, Area Director at Meltwater Buzz

Speculation around what Kate, and indeed her famous guests will be wearing took off around 10th April with conversation mounting around the 15th that the first glimpses of the dress may be obscured by umbrellas following a prediction of bad weather on the day. Just a few days later, around the 20th April, we saw a drop in sentiment as a relatively unknown designer is apparently commissioned to design the dress. Sentiment soon shot back up with a celeb blogger threatening to go to the wedding in her own wedding dress, in the hope of changing William’s mind!

In short, it may look like security is at the forefront of our minds as our future King marries his Queen, but all we really want is to see is what she’ll be wearing!

PepsiCo introduces Social Vending System technology / Via Dan Purvis, Meltwater Buzz

Many thanks to Dan Purvis of Meltwater Buzz for spotting this one.

Today PepsiCo announced the launch of a Social Vending System. It’s part of the company’s commitment to developing "smart" equipment.

The Social Vending System is a high-tech networked unit that has full touch screen interactive vending technology, allowing consumers to better connect with PepsiCo brands right at the place of purchase. A prototype model of the Social Vending System will be unveiled at the National Automatic Merchandising Association's One Show in Chicago, April 27-29.
By using digital technology, PepsiCo’s Social Vending System permits users to send a gift to a friend by selecting a beverage and entering the receiver’s name, mobile number and a customized text message. There’s also the choice to further personalize the gift with a small video recorded right at the machine.

Want to grow your business? / Meltwater Buzz, is specifically designed to provide a platform for advanced social media monitoring and analytics

"Meltwater Group, a global software company, recognises that businesses in all sectors and of all sizes are experiencing a number of social media growing pains and has developed tools for helping companies monitor what is being said about them in social media and then how to engage better with their clients and customers.

One of its services, Meltwater Buzz, is specifically designed to provide a platform for advanced social media monitoring and analytics. “We track content from the whole of the social web – essentially anywhere on the web where people can post comments, reviews, and share opinions and information.

In reality, that’s over 200 million (and counting!) blogs, forums and message boards, micro-blogs (such as Twitter), social networks (such as Facebook), review sites, video sites, and wikis,” says PR director Dan Purvis."

Research suggests that companies that have embraced social media are more likely to have seen their turnover and headcount grow than those that haven’t. Consumer-facing businesses, notably retailers and entertainment groups, have been particularly quick to see the benefits of being able to contact their customers more regularly and more intimately than was previously the case.
This is just as well, since it is clear that traditional, officially supported networks for smaller businesses appear to have little appeal or effect. Fewer than a quarter (21.7 per cent) of the UK’s business owners surveyed by the information technology company Sage Group for its new business index thought the Government was doing enough to provide sufficient support andadvice for those starting a business, while only 14 per cent viewed business information and advice made available by the Government as something they would particularly rely on. Past experience suggests that recent changes to Business Link – though they might make the service less confusing – are likely to have little effect.

Looking at the growth in corporate/in-house roles that focus specifically on oversight of social media. Eg, Pepsico, Dell / Meltwater Buzz

By Arun Sudhaman
Join the Holmes Report group LinkedIn discussion on this topic here
It was a simple enough idea. The head of community management at a major broadcasting corporation decided to launch an internal newsletter focused on the organisation’s social media initiatives. Before he could, though, came the rather brusque message from his colleagues in the branding team: “You don’t own social media!”
Many digital executives will recognise the story, demonstrating as it does the peculiar mix of politicking and bureaucracy that can bedevil efforts to integrate social media oversight into large corporate organisations. While a head of social media is rapidly becoming a must-have accessory for a range of different companies, the responsibilities in question can present a thorny challenge for corporate cultures that are often innately conservative – and prone to infighting.
